It's difficult to turn on the TV these days without seeing a report on just how unhealthy our kids are. The number of children who are dangerously overweight, and practically obese, has skyrocketed in recent years.

An obese child has a 70% larger risk of becoming an obese adult, and closer to 80% if one parent is obese. Not to mention these horrible dangers of childhood obesity:

  • Heart disease
  • Type II diabetes
  • Joint issues

  • Breathing problems

Not only are these danger's physical, but they are also emotional and psychological. Here are just a few such problems of childhood obesity:

Of course it is almost always apparent by simply visual characteristics, however, from your child's weight, height and age, you can also measure their Body Mass Index(BMI), The BMI can be used along with published charts to determine whether or not your child falls within the normal range. Some other precursors and symptoms to be aware of are as follows:


  • Abnormal self-consciousness when undressed or center of attention
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Family history of obesity (especially in immediate family)
  • High added sugar intake (sodas, juices, candies, cakes, cookies…)
  • Incessant snacking between meals
